A tin platform shed collapsed on platform 5 of Lucknow's Charbagh railway station on May 29, 2026, during a storm, trapping passengers boarding the Howrah-Doon Express and injuring two passengers plus a Train Ticket Examiner who suffered a leg fracture. The station is undergoing extensive modernisation by the Rail Land Development Authority, and the collapsed shed had reportedly already been marked for removal as part of that redevelopment work.
Vijayawada Junction Railway Station Redevelopment — Tender Failure
Indian Railways' plan to redevelop Vijayawada Junction — meant to handle roughly 20,000 passengers at peak hour with new terminals, expanded foot overbridges, multi-level parking and renovated platforms — drew a "muted response from private developers" under its design-build-finance-operate-transfer (DBFOT) public-private-partnership model, forcing the Rail Land Development Authority to prepare and reissue fresh bids. India's flagship New Delhi station redevelopment has gone through repeated tender failures since 2021 because bidders quoted far higher prices than the government's allotted budget, forcing the Rail Land Development Authority to shrink the scope of work and break the project into smaller tenders multiple times. As of late 2024 the project cost had been slashed by roughly 84% from its original estimate with no fixed completion date, even though the station handles about 400 trains and 450,000 passengers daily.
Chandigarh Railway Station Redevelopment — Three Years, Five Deadlines

Ground was broken on Nagpur station's redevelopment in December 2022 with a 36-month deadline of December 2025, but the project has since been pushed to December 2026 and local reports warn it could slip as far as 2029. Key holdups include the Railway Protection Force post and GRP police station being unable to relocate because replacement lockup facilities were never built, stalling a heritage-building demolition for months, while underground parking work on the western side has not even begun despite being planned for over a year.
Bongaigaon Railway Station — Under-Construction Roof Collapse
An overhead shed under construction at Bongaigaon railway station collapsed on August 2, 2022 while workers were installing it, injuring eight labourers who were rushed to a private hospital with grave injuries. The shed was being fitted by contractor Tribeni Constructions when it lost balance and fell on the workers below.
Kannauj Railway Station Building Collapse
On January 11, 2025, the ceiling slab/lintel of a two-storey building under construction as part of the station's Amrit Bharat Station Scheme redevelopment caved in, trapping around 40 workers. Roughly 28 people were rescued, with several hospitalized and some transferred to Lucknow for serious injuries; the iron shuttering had reportedly been laid only the day before it gave way.
Bengaluru City Railway Station — Escalators Withdrawn Within Hours of Launch
Four escalators sanctioned in the 2009 Railway Budget at a cost of ₹3 crore were commissioned with fanfare at Bengaluru City railway station, but two of them were pulled out of service within hours after two elderly passengers fell while using them. Only three of the four planned escalators had even been installed at launch, with the fourth delayed to the following month.
New Delhi Railway Station — Stampede
A crowd crush on the general-ticket platforms of New Delhi Railway Station on the night of February 15-16, 2025 killed at least 18 people, including children, and injured many more amid a surge of Maha Kumbh-bound passengers, overcrowded footbridges, and last-minute platform changes. The tragedy exposed the station's inadequate crowd-handling infrastructure despite it being India's busiest station, handling roughly 400 trains and 450,000 footfalls daily.
Bardhaman Railway Station — Repeated Structural Collapses
An overhead water tank collapsed onto passengers waiting on joint platforms 2 and 3 at the century-old Bardhaman railway station on December 14, 2023, killing three people and injuring more than 30 others. This was the second major structural failure at the same station in under four years — in January 2020 a concrete structure from the station's main building had already collapsed, critically injuring people and killing one man who later succumbed to injuries.
