An overhead water tank collapsed onto passengers waiting on joint platforms 2 and 3 at the century-old Bardhaman railway station on December 14, 2023, killing three people and injuring more than 30 others. This was the second major structural failure at the same station in under four years: in January 2020 a concrete structure from the station's main building had already collapsed, critically injuring people and killing one man who later succumbed to injuries.
The official record states: "No official cause was announced for the 2023 tank collapse; a probe was ordered. For the 2020 collapse, railway officials said a "three-member JAG committee is formed to conduct enquiry into the cause of the incident," but no determined cause was ever publicly released."
