Commercial Street "Smart City" Makeover — photo 1

On record

Commercial Street was redone under the Smart Cities Mission's TenderSURE guidelines and inaugurated with fanfare in July 2021, but within hours rainwater could not drain and flooded neighbouring shops; within a week the street "wore its usual haggard look." Years later, pavements were still being dug up and the footpaths and carriageway redone.

The official record states: "Design firm Jana Urban Space said it only prepared working drawings and "weren't involved in implementation," speculating the failure occurred because slopes toward stormwater drains were not properly maintained during execution."

“Inaugurated in the morning, draining into the shops by evening.”— Blunderlust Editorial Desk

Visitor reviews Satire

“Came to see the new Commercial Street the week it opened. It already looked exactly like the old Commercial Street.”

“Shopkeepers here can tell you precisely how many hours the smart upgrade lasted before the water came in.”
YK Y. Kaur · Bengaluru★★★★★
“Footpaths dug up again, years on. The designers say they only drew it, which leaves the slope to whoever was holding the shovel.”

Citywide (142 public toilets audited) · Public toilet

Bengaluru Public Toilets

A 2026 citizen-led audit of 142 public toilets across Bengaluru found 26% non-functional, only 6 rated "very clean," and 58% with persistent foul odour, despite the city having roughly just one public toilet for every 30,000 residents. The findings renewed calls for urgent sanitation infrastructure and management reforms.

Major Arterial Road, Kadabagere

A newly built ₹500-crore stretch of Bengaluru's Major Arterial Road near Kadabagere developed multiple large sinkholes across a 20-metre stretch just days before its scheduled inauguration on June 27, 2026. A viral video showed gaping craters on the still-uninaugurated road, which remained under contractor control and had not yet been formally handed over to the BDA.

Citywide: Namma Metro Phase 1 & Phase 2 (BMRCL) · Metro station

Namma Metro Land-Cost Overrun

A CAG report tabled in August 2026 found that "improper estimation of land requirements," combined with prolonged delays in land acquisition, inflated Namma Metro's Phase 1 and 2 costs by over ₹6,600 crore. It also found BMRCL posted continuous cash losses from 2013-14 to 2021-22 and remains dependent on state government support to service its debt, with actual ridership falling well short of projections used to justify the heavy-metro design.
