On record

A CAG report tabled in August 2026 found that "improper estimation of land requirements," combined with prolonged delays in land acquisition, inflated Namma Metro's Phase 1 and 2 costs by over ₹6,600 crore. It also found BMRCL posted continuous cash losses from 2013-14 to 2021-22 and remains dependent on state government support to service its debt, with actual ridership falling well short of projections used to justify the heavy-metro design.

The official record states: "CAG attributed the overrun to "improper estimation of land requirements, combined with prolonged delays in acquisition"; no BMRCL rebuttal was reported."

“Six thousand six hundred crore of land nobody thought to measure properly first.”— Blunderlust Editorial Desk

“Read the CAG report on the way to work on the metro it audits. Improper estimation of land requirements, it says, across both phases.”
LG L. Gupta · Bengaluru★★★★★
“Rode a train built on ridership projections it has never met, on a network that has not covered its own costs in a decade.”
OB O. Bhatia · Bengaluru★★★★★
“The overrun on land alone is larger than most metros cost outright. We are told the acquisition was merely delayed.”

Bengaluru Public Toilets

A 2026 citizen-led audit of 142 public toilets across Bengaluru found 26% non-functional, only 6 rated "very clean," and 58% with persistent foul odour, despite the city having roughly just one public toilet for every 30,000 residents. The findings renewed calls for urgent sanitation infrastructure and management reforms.

Major Arterial Road, Kadabagere

A newly built ₹500-crore stretch of Bengaluru's Major Arterial Road near Kadabagere developed multiple large sinkholes across a 20-metre stretch just days before its scheduled inauguration on June 27, 2026. A viral video showed gaping craters on the still-uninaugurated road, which remained under contractor control and had not yet been formally handed over to the BDA.

NH-44 Hosur Road, Attibele

A section of the busy Bengaluru-Hosur stretch of National Highway 44 near Attibele caved in on February 4, 2026, opening a large crater in the carriageway and crippling traffic on one of the city's key routes toward Tamil Nadu. The collapse forced long detours and hours of gridlock on the Bengaluru-Hosur corridor.
