On record

Built at a cost of ₹8,680 crore against a Detailed Project Report forecast of 41 lakh daily passengers by 2026, Nagpur Metro carried only 69,863 daily passengers in 2023-24 (about 17% of that target), while farebox revenue of ₹64.4 crore fell far short of the projected ₹434 crore. The system has posted operating losses every year since 2016-17, including ₹178.58 crore in 2020-21, and continues to run monthly losses of ₹2.5-3 crore.

The official record states: "A 2025 review attributed the gap to "inaccurate demand forecasts, infrastructure misalignment with city needs, subsidies for private vehicles, and poor transit integration.""

“Forecast 41 lakh daily riders; carried 70,000. The DPR was off by a city.”— Blunderlust Editorial Desk

Visitor reviews Satire

“The report forecast forty-one lakh riders a day and the metro carries about seventy thousand. The projection was out by a city.”
TS T. Sundaram · Nagpur★★★★★
“Rode Reach-3 at eight in the morning with a carriage to myself, which is lovely and costs three crore a month in losses.”
LG L. Gupta · Nagpur★★★★★
“Eight thousand six hundred crore of metro, sixty-four crore of fares, and a review blaming the demand forecast that justified it.”

Ashok Nagar/Ashok Square, Nagpur · Flyover

Indora–Dighori Elevated Corridor (flyover through residential balcony)

A ~9km, ₹998-crore NHAI elevated corridor was built so close to a 150-year-old house that its beam passes roughly 14-15 feet through the family's balcony, triggering outrage over urban-planning failures. NHAI issued the family a 15-day eviction notice, calling the balcony an "unauthorised encroachment," despite an encroachment flag on the project having gone unaddressed for about a year.

Pardi Flyover

A partially built span of this flyover collapsed during construction in October 2021; then, within a day of its official inauguration in February 2025, a chunk of concrete fell and damaged a passing car; by August 2025 wide gaps had opened between deck segments. The contractor (GDCL) claimed the fallen material was construction "waste," not part of the structure.

Civil Lines "Smart" Toilet: Not So Smart After All

A "smart" public toilet inaugurated by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation had its glass panel damaged within two months of opening. A study by five architecture students and three faculty advisors catalogued 19 design and safety flaws, including undersized ventilation, slippery tiles despite anti-slip alternatives being available, an overflowing overhead tank, an exposed electrical meter box, and non-standard plumbing using flexible pipes instead of bottle traps.
