Smart City Mission Bhopal

Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Setu (Ambedkar Flyover)
Bhopal's longest flyover was inaugurated in January 2025; a quality inspection a week later found unsatisfactory riding-surface finishing and excessive expansion-joint corrosion. By August 2026 the asphalt layer had begun peeling with reinforcement rods exposed.
Arif Nagar Bus Stand: Five Years, Three Phases, Still Unfinished
Meant to replace the Putli Ghar and Nadra bus stands and cut congestion in central Bhopal by handling roughly 150 buses, the project has run more than five years past its original timeline and over three years past its revised deadline. Despite officials claiming 80% completion, passenger platforms, roofing, and finishing work remain unfinished, and contractors are pressing the municipal corporation for site handover to release pending payments.
Aishbagh ROB: Bridge With a 90-Degree Turn
The 648-metre, 8.5-metre-wide road-over-bridge was built with an abrupt L-shaped, sharp ~90-degree (later measured at 118-119 degrees) turn, which went viral as "inherently dangerous." After massive public backlash, Indian Railways agreed to transfer extra land so PWD could re-profile the curve for a gentler turn, adding roughly 3 feet of carriageway width; the original construction agency and design consultant were blacklisted.
Nishatpura Railway Station: Completed but Never Opened
Nishatpura railway station was fully constructed and completed by June 2023 but nearly three years later still has no scheduled trains, staff, or passenger services. The dark, deserted station has taken on an eerie reputation locally, with residents describing it as "haunted" due to its abandoned nighttime appearance despite being structurally complete.
Bhopal BRTS Corridor
The dedicated 24km bus corridor launched in 2013 recorded 121 accidents and 21 fatalities between 2016-2018, worsened congestion in adjoining lanes despite its own underuse, and hurt local businesses; years of pressure eventually led authorities to plan dismantling stretches.
