PM Narendra Modi inaugurated this 300-metre pedestrian bridge over the Sabarmati as a flagship riverfront showpiece featuring a lit glass floor section. About seven months later, in April 2023, one of the toughened-glass panels developed internal cracks, reported as having "shattered internally", forcing officials to cordon off the spot even as the bridge stayed open to pedestrians.
The official record states: "Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation officials said they were probing whether the crack came from "compromise in the quality of glass" or the glass being unable to "withstand either the temperature or impact shocks," while insisting the toughened, laminated glass remained structurally sound."
