Construction of Puducherry's port/harbour in the late 1980s blocked the natural northward sand flow, and within a decade the town's entire beach had been swallowed by the sea, devastating over a dozen fishing villages and displacing roughly 7,000 fishing families. Subsequent breakwaters and a seawall shifted erosion elsewhere and cut off village sea access; restoration only began in 2017 after sustained activist pressure.
