This 112-year-old road-over-bridge near Sion station was closed to vehicular traffic from August 1, 2024 for demolition and reconstruction, after an IIT-Bombay structural audit recommended dismantling the century-old structure and rebuilding it with modern steel girders and RCC slabs. The bridge also obstructed Central Railway's proposed 5th and 6th line alignment between CSMT and Kurla, adding a second reason for its removal.
The official record states: "IIT-Bombay's audit "recommended dismantling of the existing ROB and re-construction of a new ROB with steel Girders and RCC slab"; the bridge's alignment also conflicted with Central Railway's planned additional rail lines."
