On August 28, 2021, a portion of an under-construction flyover on the Madurai-Natham Highway Project collapsed while workers were on site, killing one worker and injuring another.
The official record states: ""The contractor's fault": insufficient hydraulic lifting power (less than the 200 tonnes required to lift a 160-tonne girder) and no senior officials present, per state minister EV Velu."
