A partially built span of the under-construction cable-stayed bridge over the Chambal collapsed without warning on December 24, 2009, killing 48 workers and engineers. Construction was halted for years amid contractual dispute before resuming in 2014; the bridge was finally inaugurated by the PM in 2017, roughly eight years after the collapse.
The official record states: "RTI findings cited in later reporting attributed the collapse to contractor "inexperience" in cable-stayed bridge construction."
