Cochin Smart Mission Limited (CSML) approved ₹12 crore in April 2023 to modernise the Karikkamuri KSRTC bus stand into an integrated terminal for KSRTC and private buses, appointing the State Construction Corporation as executing agency in January 2024. But a land-exchange dispute between the Transport Department and Local Self-Government Department, followed by CSML shifting policy to require central government funding approval and then CSML's own tenure expiring in January 2025, left the project "practically defunct" with no funds and no construction, as of mid-2025.

On record

The official record states: "Kerala Industries Minister P. Rajeeve had pledged in a meeting that "construction would begin shortly," but no action followed; CSML's Managing Director declined to comment on the collapse of the project."

Filed as "Never opened (project stalled)" and dated to Planning began 2022; approved April 2023; stalled by mid-2025, this entry sits under the "₹12 crore allocated (a further ₹9.85 crore retender announced August 2026)" line of the public accounts.

What to expect

  • An air-conditioned terminal the buses have collectively agreed to skip.
  • Ticket counters staffed by expectation more than personnel.
  • A food court awaiting the footfall the feasibility study promised.
  • Buses picking up, as ever, from the old stand a kilometre away.

“Wandered over during a long layover in Kochi. The barricades deserve a heritage tag by now.”

“Parked nearby by accident and ended up staying an hour. It photographs better than it performs, like most public works.”

“Went looking for the bus station and found the barricades first. The plaque was on time; the plaque was the whole event.”

Palarivattom flyover ("Palarivattom flyover scam")

Just three years after opening, structural cracks and weak concrete forced authorities to demolish and rebuild the flyover; IIT-Madras and "Metro Man" E. Sreedharan's review found the contractor had used substandard construction materials, sparking a major corruption case.
