Jawali Bus Stand — 15 Years of Route to Nowhere

Inaugurated by then-CM Prem Kumar Dhumal in 2009, the bus stand has sat completely unused for roughly 15 years even though about 80 private and HRTC buses hold route permits for it — all of them instead stopping about a kilometer away at Keharian Chowk. With no maintenance ever performed, the site has no retaining wall and has become a garbage dumping ground, and the local market economy has visibly declined as a result.

On record

The official record states: "HRTC officials cite a "congested approach road, haphazard parking, and roadside encroachments" as the obstacles that make it impossible for buses to actually enter and use the facility."

Filed as "Abandoned" and dated to Foundation laid 2004; inaugurated 2009, this entry sits under the "₹30.58 lakh" line of the public accounts.

What to expect

  • An air-conditioned terminal the buses have collectively agreed to skip.
  • Ticket counters staffed by expectation more than personnel.
  • A food court awaiting the footfall the feasibility study promised.
  • Buses picking up, as ever, from the old stand a kilometre away.

“Wandered up from the bus station next door, which was also unfinished. It is 'temporarily' closed, in the municipal sense of temporary.”

“Came here on a heritage walk that had clearly lost the plot. The only thing on schedule here was the mobilisation advance.”

“Made the trip after a colleague swore it was worth seeing. It is a masterclass in beginning and nothing else.”
