One of two arch-technology bridges being built on the Mulwagu tank since 2016 developed severe cracks and partially collapsed after 13cm of rainfall increased water flow, loosening the centering and sweeping away supporting iron rods over a 38-metre stretch. Residents disputed the official weather-only explanation, alleging construction delays and poor material quality were the real cause.
The official record states: "The Executive Engineer said "flash flood washed away iron rods and centering boxes, leading to cracks on the sides and in the middle of the bridge for 38 metres"; the R&B Minister ordered an inquiry."
