The bridge had been deteriorating for some time under continuous stress from heavy vehicle traffic, including overloaded sand-mining lorries, before a section gave way on January 4, 2025, cutting the direct Cherla-Venkatapuram passage and forcing a detour via Eturnagaram.
The official record states: "Authorities attributed the collapse to prolonged structural deterioration from heavy-vehicle (sand lorry) traffic; the Roads and Buildings department pledged a temporary diversion and repair work "as soon as possible.""
