Coimbatore has spent no small sum on attractions of unmatched ambition. Below, newest first, are the public-works entries every visitor should know about before their next trip through the city. Whichever route you take, the guide covers what to see, its current status, and roughly how much it cost the public to build.

Fatal Collapse — 9 dead#01
Somanur, rural Coimbatore district · Bus Station

Somanur Bus Stand: Roof Collapse (Sunshade With No Support Column)

A roughly 100-foot-long, 15-foot-deep concrete sunshade cantilevered off the main Somanur bus stand building collapsed on commuters sheltering from rain, killing at least 9 people and trapping around 20, with 7 admitted to a government hospital and more treated privately. An official confirmed the shade had "no supporting column" for its 15-foot span, and that days of continuous heavy rainfall likely weakened the unsupported structure until it gave way.

Under Repeat Repair#02
Avinashi Road roundana, near Coimbatore Junction railway station · Flyover

Avinashi Road Flyover Structural Neglect

India's first roundabout-style grade separator and Tamil Nadu's second flyover has gone without adequate maintenance for decades; it has no pedestrian corridor, and tree roots/branches have weakened the structure. Plans to widen it have stalled amid official uncertainty.

Frequently Asked

Visitor questions

What is the number one place to see in Coimbatore?

Scroll to the list. It runs newest first, by the most recent year on record for each entry, so whatever the city has managed most recently sits at the top. Entries with no documented year are filed at the end.

Are these attractions safe to visit?

Define 'safe'. Daylight visits are advised. Maintain distance from open manholes, leaning structures, and anything under active repair. We accept no liability; neither does anyone else, which is rather the theme.

How much did these projects cost?

Where public figures exist, they're listed on each attraction's page, sourced from tenders, budgets and RTI replies. Several projects have no publicly disclosed final cost — that's noted too.

Can I suggest an attraction for this guide?

Coimbatore produces new landmarks faster than we can rank them. Submit a photo and location via the 'Submit a Blunder' button, and our desk will verify and add it.
